APOLLO RUN RELEASE FULL LENGTH DEBUT – HERE BE DRAGONS, VOL III
ON SEPTEMBER 25, 2012
FORNICATED FROM THE BEATLES TONIGHT AT PUBLIC ASSEMBLY
Here Be Dragons, The Musical in August and Tour Dates Scheduled for Fall
“John McGrew sounds uncannily like Jeff Buckley with some Freddie Mercury-worthy grandstanding thrown in… the band sustains a record-perfect clarity in performance.”
- The Village Voice
“The group merits far more widespread attention than it’s received thus far…”
- NPR Music
Apollo Run writes mountain-conquering songs. They’re not trying to earn a wink from some gal; they’re taking over the world. So it helps that their big-hearted-myth-rock is crafted by three dudes who don’t mind getting sweaty out there. The Brooklyn trio (John McGrew, Jeff Kerestes, Graham Fisk) mold a sound that straddles classic Queen, Muse and Electric Light Orchestra and is gearing up to release their debut full-length – Here Be Dragons, Vol III on September 25, 2012.
The 11-track album follows their incredibly successful debut EPs – Here Be Dragons, Vol I and II, where the band garnered glowing reviews from NPR Music, Time Out NY, The Village Voice, Relix, The Deli Magazine, ArtistDirect and more. In March 2011, a well-timed release of their ‘Charlie Sheen’s Got Tiger Blood, Man’ video on YouTube gained them a feature with the Huffington Post and airplay on various radio stations across the country, including an interview on LA’s KROQ.
Apollo Run is the HOUSE BAND for tonight’s interactive performance event, Fornicated From The Beatles at Public Assembly in Brooklyn. The show starts at 7:30 and you can get tix here.
For the release of their debut LP, Apollo Run trained hard on fundamentals. As lead singer John McGrew puts it, “It was a little like Rocky IV. We did a crazy amount of vocal drills and rhythm exercises. Imagine one of those awesome 80′s sports movie montages where the athlete is getting back into shape for the big game/fight/race. That was us, and it worked.” Drummer Graham Fisk adds, “For VIII, we had all this great new material and a sense of purpose heading into the studio. A do or die mentality.”
The result is an hour of sweeping epic. Lush harmonies and cascades of keys crowd around the chamber of “Autumn Song.” Swagger reigns in “Bending The Light,” riding on sinewy rhythms and salty disco bass. The chattery vocal effects in “The Inevitable Small Rebellions” mark an unmistakable new authority in the AR sound. The crown jewel might be “Sirens,” a picture-perfect ballad that constitutes the first instance of the band writing a song all together, from the ground up.
The band has plans to hit the road this fall in support of Here Be Dragons, Vol III. They have a couple of shows in the NYC area this summer and will hit the States this fall with shows in New Haven, Boston and San Francisco with more to be added shortly.
Never ones to follow convention, AR will present Here Be Dragons, The Musical on Saturday, August 11 at Acting Manitou, a summer drama camp, in Oakland, Maine. Based in a futuristic dystopian society, Here Be Dragons, The Musical tells the story of love, chaos, and war in an unforgiving time. Inspired by the Arab Spring and the Occupy Wall Street movement, the show asks the question: Does history always repeat itself, or is there a way to break the cycle?
Acting Manitou is an overnight summer drama camp in Maine for dedicated actors and actresses ages 11-17. The show will feature music by Apollo Run from Here Be Dragons, Vol. I, II, & III, book by Steve Borowka, music direction by John McGrew and the show will be preformed by the campers and the band themselves.
The show will be live streamed on Saturday, August 11th at 8:30pm at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/apollo-run and more info can be found at http://www.apollorun.com/HBDMusical.
